Word of Life Fellowship, Schertz

No. 10 in the Congregational History Series

Submitted by Patti Mitschke

Word of Life Fellowship is a mission plant of the Texas District – Lutheran Chruch Missouri Synod. The seed for this church plant originated as God gave Pastor Henry Biar and King of Kings Lutheran Church in San Antonio, a vision for mission. With the help of Ken Hennings of the Texas District and other area churches, they formed a Texas Mission Action Council (TMAC) to study the feasibility of a new mission plant.

Following the Lord's leading, the TMAC recommended and the Board for Mission Administration of the Texas District called a mission planter, Pastor Ken Mitschke, who accepted the call and was commissioned on January 23, 2000.

Ken and his wife Patti took every opportunity to receive training in church planting, talk with their new neighbors wherever they went, to cultivate relationships, plant seeds and trust God would bring the growth.

After the first year, God brought together a Launch TEAM of 25 people. Over the ensuing year they prayed and planned and sought God’s guidance for this new church start. God also raised up over 200 prayers partners and contributors who supported this ministry. Without their help, this ministry would not have been possible.

On January 27, 2002, Word of Life Fellowship celebrated its Grand Opening Service with 154 in attendance. While many were guests who were already active in a home church and came to show their support, several others were not regularly being fed spiritually.

Word of Life Fellowship currently worships at Wilder Intermediate School in Schertz. This small group of believers has had a huge impact on their community by being a part of several area events. They regularly team up with the Schertz library to provide snacks for their Summer Movie Nights. They give away American flags and cold bottled water as part of the community’s 4th of July celebration. They provide volunteer help at the San Antonio Food Bank, Church Under the Bridge and Elf Louise. Word of Life Fellowship truly is a "church without walls."

As God continues to nurture and grow this congregation, a move to a new worship location is in its near future. No matter where we worship on Sundays, we look forward to being part of God's work of building a bigger heaven and better lives.
